I Put a Spell on You

Client: British Museum

Background

Client brief: To research, plan and deliver a six day art workshop for families, tying in with the Journey through the afterlife: ancient
Egyptian Book of the Dead exhibition and culminating in a large-scale artwork. The drop-in workshop has to engage participants of
mixed abilities and ages, creating a constantly growing installation which will be on show to the general public in the Great Court.

My concept: To create our own giant version of the Egyptian Book of the Dead using Egyptian imagery and hieroglyphs on papyrus.
The ancient Egyptians believed that with the use of spells, the deceased had the ability to change into different beings. Each day the workshop would look at a different transformation spell and being with participants writing the spell in hieroglyphs, adding in their own
name, and also creating their own drawing on papyrus.

Objectives: As a holiday activity, the emphasis is on having fun and being creative, but with the opportunity to learn a little about
the Book of the Dead and be inspired to find out more in the exhibition. By contributing to a large installation, the participants have
the opportunity to see their own work on display in the amazing surroundings of the British Museum!
